GroundWater, LAND, and people in Tanzania
Tanzania is a rapidly developing nation and economy in eastern Africa, bordered by the western leg of the East African Rift Belt on the west and the Indian Ocean on the east. Tropical forest, savanna, tall mountains and plateaus, rich with resources. And many people. Water is available but precious. Groundwater can be difficult to access in complex rock terrains, and can be subject to contamination. Developing and protecting water supplies calls for a skilled, dedicated, professional and well-equipped team: N&S Ground+Water Tanzania Ltd.
Land and Water
Tanzanian geology is ancient and complex. There are huge lakes, but subject to pollution. Volcanic or granite rocks can yield up abundant groundwater or not so much. People have lived here since, well since there were people. |
Land and people
Land is fertile and abundant, but life can be hard if water is hard to come by for people and livestock. Students struggle to stay in school and learn, preventable illnesses and time spent hunting water wear the people down, especially women and children. |
Water planning
Even with abundant water, problems such as excessive fluoride lurk in some areas, and can be difficult to solve. Just drilling a borehole and leaving a pump can harm as well as help. Ground+Water Tanzania works on the whole process from project inception, through water treatment and delivery. |
OUR GOAL
Reliable good water supply for communities and agriculture |
First it's about
Our People
GWT is led by partners Stuart A. Smith, an American hydrogeologist with a long career in groundwater supply, including troubleshooting and improving systems, and Naftal D. Mandi, who manages day to day operations. They are supported by a qualified team of geoscientists, drillers, technicians, and additional fundis to get the work done. More on the partners

A summary of
Our Services
GWT provides site-surveying geology and geophysics, borehole (well) drilling and completion, pumping system installation and services (including solar), water system design and construction, including engineering, and water treatment planning and installation. When hiring these services, consider qualifications and attitudes toward quality, not just price. Many are conscientious and qualified, but do not assume that someone who offers a "borehole site survey" is qualified or that all borehole drilling is equal. More on services

IT'S UP TO USMake a Difference
There are a number of good full-service groundwater contractors in Tanzania. We collaborate with several trading services as needed. But we're widely spread. Like the other good ones, we maintain our Water Ministry licenses and follow the Ministry's rules and guidelines, in addition to global groundwater-sector standards. We pay our people well for these good positions, and offer these services at a reasonable price. Our price competition sits at fuel stops, deals in cash, and work fast. You draw your conclusions on sustainability.
